Australian Prescriber is an independent and free, peer-reviewed journal that includes evidence-based review articles on drugs and therapeutics. Australian Prescriber provides critical reflection on decision-making, and in-depth, practical and applied discussion on a broad range of topics addressing the intersection of quality use of medicines, diagnostics and pathology.
We now have an opportunity to appoint a Managing Editor to lead this publication at Therapeutic Guidelines. They will oversee operational management of the editorial team reporting to this role, responsible for delivery of content strategy and quality, including new content development, and content deployment to meet government key performance indicators. The Managing Editor is also a member of the Australian Prescriber Editorial Advisory Committee and collaborates with the Australian Prescriber Stakeholder Network, to facilitate peer review of journal articles.
The ideal candidate
To be successful in this role, we are seeking an individual who has a postgraduate qualification in pharmacy or medicine, as well as qualifications in writing, editing or publishing being highly desirable. Over your career to date, you will have at least 6 years’ experience in publishing, 4 years in a senior editorial role and 3 years’ experience working in clinical care. You would also bring to the role broad healthcare sector knowledge, including familiarity with external organisations, clinicians and resources in the field of quality use of medicine, knowledge of current developments in medical information publishing and digital publishing and knowledge of evidence-based medicine and associated methodologies.
We are also seeking candidates who:
- Have experience of managing and leading a team of professionals.

Nominations for Election to the Board of Therapeutic Guidelines Limited are sought
The constitution of Therapeutic Guidelines Limited stipulates that the Board shall comprise nine Directors.
Directors hold office for three-year terms. The terms of three Directors’ positions will need to be filled at the 2024 Annual General Meeting and nominations for these positions are sought.
If you wish to be a candidate for one of these positions, nominations must be in writing on the Therapeutic Guidelines nomination form (enclosed) and signed by two Members who are entitled to vote at the Annual General Meeting.
A list of the competencies that are considered important for Directors is enclosed. Please note that, following a review of Board knowledge and experience, the following skills are sought: governance, publishing, information technology and marketing.
Completed nomination forms must be accompanied by:
- a consent to act as a director (enclosed),
- a curriculum vitae (not more than two A4 pages in length),
- the names of two referees, and
- a letter from the nominee (not more than 500 words) explaining how s/he meets the identified required skills/competencies and how s/he expects to be able to contribute to the Board.

Expressions of Interest

Expert Group Member
Experts Group Members work with an Editor to develop and review topics in a particular therapy area. An Expert Group is usually composed of approximately 14 people, including a Chair, an Editor, experts in relevant medical specialties, general practitioners, paediatricians, pharmacists and allied health professionals from around Australia.
Evaluation Network Member
The Evaluation Network includes users of Therapeutic Guidelines, from medical and pharmacy students to experienced healthcare professionals. Members of the Evaluation Network provide feedback to the Editorial Team at regular intervals that informs project planning and topic revision.
Editor
Editors work with an Expert Group to update clinical advice in line with the latest evidence. Each editor is responsible for leading the review of a clinical guideline and requires strong communication and project management skills. Editors have a graduate qualification in pharmacy, pharmacology or medicine, and a minimum of 3 years post-graduate clinical experience. Qualifications or experience in editing, writing, or publishing are desirable, but not essential.
